Stollsteimer Calls for Justice For Leroy

HAVERTOWN – Democratic candidate for Delaware County District Attorney JackStollsteimer today called on District Attorney Katayoun Copeland to reopen the case of Leroy Evans of Chester. Mr. Evans has served more than thirty-eight (38) years of a ninety-nine (99) year sentence for the murder and robbery of  Mrs. Emily Leo in November of 1980.

“Leroy Evans has always maintained his innocence in the murder of Mrs. Leo and was convicted at trial largely on the testimony of an accomplice, Anthony Tyrone Jones. Mr. Jones has since recanted his testimony and provided a sworn statement that not only exonerates Mr. Evans but provides new information about the crime that better conforms to the evidence presented at trial.” said Stollsteimer. “After reviewing the evidence with Mr. Evans’s attorney and his investigator, a retired homicide detective, it is plainly evident that reasonable doubt may now exist and Leroy Evans may be an innocent man falsely imprisoned for life.”

Stollsteimer called on District Attorney Copeland to do justice for Leroy by agreeing to reinvestigate the case and send evidence for DNA testing as requested by Mr. Evans’ attorney, Michael Malloy, Esq.

“Katayoun Copeland has been our appointed DA for more than a year. It’s time for her to do what an experienced, fair and independent prosecutor should do with Mr. Evans’s case – reopen the investigation and let justice be done.” said Stollsteimer.
